House at Krampnitz Gate, Potsdam

North of Potsdam’s historic old town, in Krampnitz, a vibrant urban district is taking shape, blending city life with nature. As part of a design workshop, BFA is developing a concept for the “Krampnitz Gate”, envisioned as the ideal entrance to the neighborhood within the former barracks area. At the heart of the design is a raised platform that defines the surrounding public spaces while housing commercial areas. Resting atop this foundation, three distinct buildings are arranged, each featuring a unique architectural style based on its size and orientation. Buildings A and C are designed with central corridors or open-access walkways, offering compact one- and two-room apartments. In contrast, Building B follows a “Spänner” layout, providing flexible options for three-room apartments or adaptable office spaces on the first floor. The design embraces a contrast between a “hard” outer shell, echoing the existing brick facades, and a “soft” inner core, envisioned as a lush green microcosm. This inner space is brought to life with open facades, an extensively planted rooftop terrace, and vertical greenery.
